Description: | For this recording, Sayany helped to gather a group of men who had come for the market in Guangaje, some from Guangaje itself and some from nearby communities like Salamalag. Between 3:00 and 4:00 one participant lists all of the different communities under the jurisdiction of the Parrish of Guangaje. In their descriptions of some of the local practices, they mention festivals where people dress as certain characters such as the famous “yumbo” who appears at different festivals around highland Ecuador. Each of the different participants give different accounts of local information. Mountain names (37:00) include Pucará, Rumi Cruz, Ingawa, Angawana, Wawa Pucará, Pizingwana, Pedregal, etc. The mention that their community and others (Pilapuchin) could potentially have good access to the Quilotoa crater lake for tourism, but instead most people go by the paved road (using the toponym Jataló).
Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers.
Sessions include conversation and activities, semi-structured in collaboration with participants.
