Description: | This is a narrative audio recording in which Nasi Gonean tells a story about the history of Upiara and Bitur speakers. In the story, a man named Kedua goes with many other men to a place near Petom in order to burn the grass (a hunting technique). Kedua was not a good hunter, and he usually kept his bows tied up in his house. They went out, and crossed the creek at a place called Bagora. They started burning the grass, and many wallabies were coming out. Kedua was hitting all the wallabies in all the right places, killing them. They continued hunting them all the way to the point, and Kedua kept shooting and killing wallabies while the other hunters missed. When they finished, he put bundles of meat on his shoulders, and he had a lot to carry. A string broke with meat on it, so he gave it to another man, telling him to take it ahead to his children. He continued to give meat to others to carry as well. When he crossed a log over water, a crocodile knocked him off and swallowed him. The crocodile took him up to the top of a hill and left him there. The story continues, with more happening underground. Basically, the men who came before Kedua was knocked off the log spoke Giribam, but the men who came after spoke Bitur. This was a story about how the people of Upiara came to speak Bitur. The recording was made at the residence of Wendy Maiki. Transcription, translation, and discussion of individual word glosses were done by hand in a field notebook, and later entered into ELAN. | |
