Description: | This is a video recording of a traditional dance performed by elders of the community. This performance was part of the national Independence Day celebration held by the village, the biggest annual holiday celebration. This particular dance is a traditional welcome dance. It was performed in part to welcome the researcher, Phillip Rogers, to the village and to welcome him to the holiday festivities. The song consists of two primary parts: the first is slow and calls out the person or people being welcomed, and the second is fast-paced in which welcome--pasapasa--is repeated various times. This recording was made on the rugby field in the northwest part of Upiara village. | |
