Description: | In this video, Grandpa Karsa Tashi explains and demonstrates how to weave or knit traditional bamboo hat with step-by-step process. He also demonstrates how and for what purposes they use it according to different seasons such as winter (sunny/windy), summer (rainy/windy) and other decorative purpose in and outside the village as well as country. He also shows the origin (bamboo) of hat and its unique/different shapes and usages according to the oral and practical history passed down from his great grand forefathers. | |
Wangchuk is a PhD researcher at the University of Essex. He is PI, from Phonjikha and a native speaker of Nyenkha. | ||
Yangchen is a student and lives in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. She is employed as a helper for this Nyenkha documentation project. | ||
Ugyen works for the DDC office and employed as RA with Wangchuk Rinzin. He is a native of Tshangla and uses Dzongkha and English as the national language and international language, respectively. | ||
Jamtsho is a Gup (local leader) of Phobji Gewog (council) and native speaker of Nyenkha. He is employed as a language consultant as well as regional host who selects speaker/language consultant, provide basic facilities (family host) and arrange all necessary things. The research team was really grateful to him for providing all necessary requirements for this ELDP project. | ||
Dorji Phub is a Nyenkha speaker and lives at Phobjikha, Wangduephodrang, Bhutan. He is gifted with talented skill in weaving traditional carrying bamboo basket which is passed down from his great grand forefathers. | ||

Karsa Tashi is a 72 years old grand father lives at Taphu, Phobjikha, Wangduephodrang. He speaks Nyenkha as his mother tongue and uses to communicate with his family and fellow Phobjibs. He is fluent in Dzongkha, national language of Bhutan, uses it to communicate with other Dzongkha speakers when he travels outside the village for commercial purposes. He is well-versed in tradition of Nyenkha spoken at Phonjikha and great resource of both Nyenkha and dzongkha in and around Phobjikha village. | ||
