| Description: | Prominent Solega activist C. Madegowda is asked to talk about the impact of the proposed Project Tiger reserve on their ancestral lands. C. Madegowda responds that the Solega are determined to stay in the forest, because going elsewhere would be detrimental to their welfare. He then talks about other issues being faced by the Solega, including the rampant growth of the woody weed Lantana in the forest, loss of indigenous language and cultural practices, the lack of basic amenities, and the lack of sufficient government aid. He argues that the Project Tiger reserve (in its original form, which requires humans to relocate) must be opposed through organised action, and suggests that many of the social issues mentioned above can be tackled by reviving the indigenous legal system of the Solega. NOTE: The Solega were granted full land rights in 2011, but are still concerned about being evicted from the forest, either forcibly or through other means. | |
