Description:Shaodekkum is the introduction to all chants except for the chants which commence the highest ritual, the buffalo sacrifice. There are two different Shaodekkum chants depending on the nature of the event being celebrated. If the ritual is aimed at bringing auspiciousness, prosperity, and good health to the host, the Shaodekkum will start with the words 'htar paw nay'. If, however, the ritual is being held to expel/exorcise evil spirits or purify someone who is processed by evil, the Shaodekkum will begin with the words 'nay sui yay'. There is also a video of the actual Khun Yu chanting and the Khun Yu performance. It was performed at the blessings of new house where the host/homeowner sat next to the shaman while the shaman was chanting. Khun Yu is celebrated during special occasions such as the blessings of new houses and at harvest time festivals to bring luck and good health. During the harvest festival ritual, two earthen jars of rice fermented beer and a sacrificed pig are offered in the rice fields, while another jar of beer is kept at home. Crops, fruits, and vegetables from the fields must be brought to the home after celebrating the festival.
