Description: | This folder contains numerous personal interviews and a collection of informal conversations and small talk within and among groups of individuals. The topics include: oral history of creation story and cosmology, migration and settlement stories, miscellaneous information on ritual performances, the marriage ceremony, the funeral ceremony, musical instruments, greetings terminology, origins for the names of days and months, clan history and genealogy, establishing bonds of loyalty, cursing, inheritance laws, divorce proceedings, and traditional law. The original reason why Sumtu women have tattoos was so that they would be unattractive to non-Sumtu men. However, over time it became fashionable and married women who did not have tattoos as young girls had their faces tattoo after they had children. When a woman with tattoos dies, the urn in which her ashes are buried is painted to resemble a facial tattoo. In this video the two women talk about their tattooed faces. | |
