Description:		Dirk tells the story of three gods of Makimi. He tells it three times: in Yaur, Waropen, and Malay. The summary is as follows (based on the Malay): There was a village in the mangrove forest called Aiwai, near present-day Makimi. There were three gods there: Mekari, Werari, and Aiwuri. Every night the village elders would go to burn benzoin and other incense around the gods, which were stone statues, in order to ask for the health and safety of the people. The gods would come to life. They lacked the ability to speak, but found other ways to communicate their wishes. The villagers believed in the gods so strongly that they built them a huge house spanning the land between two rivers. In 1918, a great earthquake and tsunami destroyed Aiwai, including the gods and their house. The place where the house stood is now called Kuhura Aiwai. The people resettled at a new site called Rarimerei. Not long after, a woman named Imbaraseni arrived. She was a goddess from Jaiwi (near Goni) who had won a victory over the goddess Soriti. In memory of her victory, the people of Rarimerei gave the name Imbaraseni to the coastal part of their settlement. The eastern part of the original settlement, known as Lagari, was later given to the Yaur people. The central part, known as Simumbo, was kept by the Makimi (Waropen) people. The western part, known as Simuti, was later given to people from Doreri, Numfor, Ambumi, Wondama, and other places.
		Dirk is from the village of Sima. He is a native speaker of Yaur and Waropen, has near-native fluency in Moor, basic proficiency in Yerisiam, and learned Dutch as a young man. He is an important local figure in traditional law (adat) in Nabire.
