Description: HDG speaks about the various waterholes belonging to/used by the different clans in the GanbaLtji area (land and sea along the channel between Elcho Island and the Australian mainland) and about the hospitality of the clans towards each other. This story is part of a hugh collection of recordings made of HDG by B. Schebeck (linguist) in 1966.

The aim of the project is to produce an annotated and illustrated Golpa story book about the Golpa people, their land and culture. Golpa is a severely endangered YolNGu language (Yirritja moiety) spoken on Elcho Island, Northern Territory, Australia. Most stories in the book are part of a hugh collection of audio recordings made back in the 1960s. The narrator of these texts is the father of today's Golpa speakers/consultants. Until this project these texts have never been processed. There are only very few Golpa left who still speak and/or understand the language to a considerable extend. The processing of these recordings will reveal and document linguistic and cultural knowledge about a dying Australian indigenous group and make it accessible to the community as well as to researchers. This project is the first attempt to document and describe the Golpa language (and culture).

HDG speaks about the various waterholes belonging to/used by the different clans in the GanbaLtji area (comprising Elcho Island, Wessel Islands and Cape Wessels) and about the hospitality of the clans towards each other. This story is part of a hugh collection of recordings made of HDG by B. Schebeck in 1966.

Trevor understands some Golpa but doesn't speak it. However, he has a very good knowledge of cultural matters and is also very good in translating/transfering complex cultural concepts and meanings into English.

BS is a well known Australian linguist who has made significant contributions towards understanding and describing Australian indigeneous languages and concepts. Amongst other things he has written (and published) a number of papers on Yolŋu languages. The Golpa recording collection was made under the umbrella of survey work on (North East) Arnhem Land languages in 1965 and 1966. This study was funded by AIAS (now AIATSIS).

HDG was a very prestigous man. On Elcho Island he was known as "King of the Wessels". Gunhu' was with the army stationed at Ŋuy'ŋuy (Jenson Bay), Wessel Islands. He died in 1975.

Garrutju is a well educated lady who has a number of jobs (such as officially registered interpreter or as head of Marthakal Homelands Resource Centre). She is a semi-speaker of Golpa and has helped getting this text annotated and translated.

Muthali is the last fluent spekaer of Golpa. He helped annotate and translate the text. (James Barripaŋ Gandaŋu is his official name, however, he is called Muthali. This is probably due to a name-taboo-issue. He may also be called Balanbuy. James is his English name.)

JKL has been in touch with the Golpa since 2008 via phone. They first met and worked together in 2009, then again in 2011 and 2012. She has spent a total of approx. 5 months in the field. JKL has carried out all field trips with the company of her little son resulting in wonderful social contacts with the locals and more natural work sessions.

I obtained a digitized copy of this recording from John Greatorex (Charles Darwin University) in May 2011.

The gapu maŋutji text (780_2 B) is the second story on a recording with the total length of about an hour. The approximate size of BS's Golpa recording collection is 27 hours.
