Description: | The primary economic activity in Western Pantar is dryland rice cultivation. The rice harvest occurs in April and must be completely quickly in order to minimize damage from wind storms and loss to insects and birds. Hence, harvesting is done in large extended-family groups. The harvest is a labor intensive process, and it is often accompanied by harvesting songs in a call-and-response form. The songs tell stories from history, recounting long-ago events. The caller moves the story forward one verse at a time, while the responders answer with a chorus. The song may pass from one caller to another, with each successive caller picking up the story where the other left off. The song in this video is called Kua Horang, and it recounts the history of the war between the Kua Hadde and Illu clans. It was recorded in 2007 during a harvest at a field called La Palli, on Pantar Island. | |
