Description: | James Mesi and Luke Gitakulu talking about a traditional fishing technique involving trapping fish in a cairn of rocks, seated under a house by the village square in Laato village.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
James Mesi talks to Luke Gitakulu about a traditional fishing technique known as upo (kuluupo), used in villages that don't have access to a reef. He describes how people would build a cairn of rocks (numwaa) and leave it until a number of fish have moved into it. The cairn is then closed off with mats and opened so that the fish can be chased into a basket.
Åshild Næss is recording. James Mesi is speaking while Luke Gitakulu asks questions. The recording was transcribed and translated by Edmund Langu.
