Description: | Luke Gitakulu and Daniel Somo talk about land rights, seated under a house by the village square in Laato village.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
Daniel Somo talks to Luke Gitakulu about rights to land and how they were traditionally passed on. He describes different circumstances under which a person might pass on the rights to a piece of land to another, and how, although land generally passes through the male line, under certain circumstances a might might also give the rights to a piece of land to his daughter. He discusses the modern practice of selling land out of the community, which has never been a tradition in the past.
Åshild Næss is recording. Daniel Somo is speaking while Luke Gitakulu asks questions. The recording was transcribed and translated by Philip Paikai and Åshild Næss.
