Description: | Father George Taliava and Luke Gitakulu discuss a now-abandoned practice of concubinage or prostitution, sitting outside the researcher's accommodation in Nyimââ village.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
Father George Taliava describes the traditional custom of institutionalised prostitution or concubinage, where a man would keep a woman as a concubine who would be available for sexual favour to the man's allies. He describes how women were made to participate in this practice, how it was managed, and why it was abandoned.
