Description:		After he has seemingly failed singing his granddaughter into sleep, HJG1 tries singing his own version of the widely known song Jindo Arirang (진도 아리랑). Jindo Arirang is one of the many regional versions of a song known as 'Arirang', which is a love song that tells of a woman's yearning for her partner who has gone far away, hoping for him 'to get ill on his feet' so that he can return home. Jindo is an island in South Jeolla province, not far from Jeju Island, and well-known for its dog breeds and music. The singing style cultivated in Jindo is seen to be representative of a singing style called 'Namdosori' (남도소리), 'singing of the South', which is known for its richness of timbre, wide phrasing with relatively little ornaments, and powerful usage of a coarse voice. Especially during the era of South Korean military dictatorship, Arirang was stilised into an essential symbol for the Korean national consciousness, representing the plight and deep suffering that 'every Korean' is supposed to carry in them, denoted by a word known as 'han', which translates roughly as 'deep sorrow'. Jindo Arirang is one of the most well-known versions of Arirang, and its lively speed and rhythm, as well as its comparatively narrow range of sounds makes it relatively easy for people to sing. Alternating between chorus and verses, the former one is fixed, whereas the latter one is either sung by heart, or improvised. HJG1's version of the Jindo Arirang is interesting, since he combines widely-known lyrics with lyrics from other songs (such as the equally well-known boat song, pɛsʰnolɛ (뱃노래)), or adds imprivised lyrics in some verses. To the musicologist, this type of material can be interesting, since it shows how folk songs often are actually sung, contrary to the highly codified and more performance-oriented versions shown on national broadcast. More interestingly to the linguist, there are a few bits where he adds lyrics in Jejuan, which is exceptional given that usually one would follow the language of the song, which in this case is Korean. Furthermore, the little bits towards the end where he plays with his granddaughter and engages in lively 'baby-speak', with bits of prayers and nicknames thrown in, will be interesting to both anthropologists and psycholinguistically interested people.
		This project aims at building an annotated audio-video corpus of spoken Jejuan with a focus on conversational genres, supplementing existing documentation of narratives and songs.
		Father of two, a daughter almost in her 40s, and a son. He and his relatives do different sorts of farming, which is beans, peppers and tangerines. He and his wife often help out at relative's farm, and he seems to be well-known in the village as a good talker, musician and good-hearted person. Can read and write Chinese characters, and is literate in Korean writing. Great knowledge and memory of words and expressions that he does not use anymore. Exceptional ability to create stories from stimuli, and expressing humour in language. He has great knowledge of Jejuan sayings, and knows folk songs as well.
