Description:On Thursday before Chuseok, the biggest National Holiday of the year and day to commerate the ancestors, SUK1 went to the Sinchon Elders' Centre to bring them a gift. He encounters a few ladies sitting in the kitchen and talking, and starts recording them. They talk about how they perceive regional differences in language, with GOH1 telling her friend a story about how mainladers react to Jejuan. After explaining how they used to light fire in the kitchen for cooking, they explain to SUK1 the different spots in Sukkun where people used to get sweet water from in the past, together with the names for these toponyms, and the specific functions each spot used to have, so for example, t͡ɕɒpanmul for bathing and slaughtering pigs. As their memories unfold, they get to discussing their experiences during the 4.3 massacres when they were little children. / jeju0116-01-02: place names for sweet water spots in the ocean, jeju0116-03: place names for particular fields in Sukkun, as well as names for different types of cooked grains. The first nine minutes of jeju0116-04-07 are about the ladies' memories of the 4.3 massacres when they were young, and how since then the village structures have changed. Then GOH1 talks about her mother who used to be a tailor and a hatmaker. She then tells a funny story from her childhood, being called a tuluɛki, a child that is not socialised well yet and does not think and act autonomously yet. BMJ1 recalls her memory of how they used to make fake cigarettes using pumpkin leaves just to pretend they were smoking. The three ladies then leave, and then GOH1 and YSH2 talk in the kitchen about their families. GOH1 gives YSH2 grapes to take home. The recording ends with nobody in the frame. For the creation of jeju0116-04, the first 06:42 minutes out of 11:35 have been cut out using TSmuxer since they are a consent discussion with a speaker, that part has been saved in a separate MTS file entitled "jeju0116-04_split" and is not part of the deposit.
This project aims at building an annotated audio-video corpus of spoken Jejuan with a focus on conversational genres, supplementing existing documentation of narratives and songs.
