Description: | This session was recorded in a dilapidated uninhabited house close to p002's house. That morning the wind was quite strong and the initial location under the mango trees, beside the banana palms was too windy. Still, the wind is still caused a lot of noise on the recording, I am really frustrated that I forgot the windscreen. I have set up the table and the chairs in a way that the two interlocuters would face each other a little bit, howver, they rarely looked at each other. To the point, that I thought it maybe better to get another women as interlocuter. That was not possible on short notice because most women close by had left to collect firewood and I did not want to just grab a passer by. I therefore left it as it is. It is interesting to note the different behaviour of the two interlocuters with the stories_007-009 session, where the two knew each other very well, as they grew up together and even went to school together. p015 only came to Koukouba in 2005 and is not married into the close family of p002. I somehow think that these reasons in combination of the differnce in sex might have caused the felt distance between the interlocuters. One of the patterns that I have often observed is that men and women talk to each other from a distance. Of a courtyard/house/extended family it is usually the men that sit in groups apart from the women. Conversation between them is thus from a distance. Also, even if women are not involved in a conversation of their own or they are single, but want to listen to the discussion of men, they will often sit somewhat apart. Only if they are close relatives, elder women, or guests or if one meets somebody on the road can one observe more closeness between the opposit sexes. (All of this seems somewhat different in Kamsar, I could observe the basic patterns, but the boundaries are more permeable. During the filming a neighbour was interested and wanted to walk into the picture. p002 intervened and sent her around. She then appears in the door behind the interlocuters. At another point a small child walked up to the recording location. At first I was able to distract it and lure it away to a neighbours house. The child came back, however, and Nata called sb. to take care of the child. As for the recording the same set up as for video-002 was used. Since I had to only record a localized conversation and the wind was strong this seemed to be the best option. As usual I walked around and let the speakers alone, only to come by every once in a while to monitor. Since I have forgotten the second pair of headphones in Kamsar I monitored the Marantz PMD 661 through the level meter. The video is not indicated like video001 and video002 on film, but it immediately follows it. After this session comes the test conversation filming on the tape. Pictures were taken of the recording setup. The videos can be found on tvideo 002. | |
