| Description: | This was an impromptu session, four women (p050-p053), who had gathered behind the house (kafaan) to extract palm oil, said that they were practicing songs and wanted me to record them. Once I set up the recording equipment and asked them how they wanted to record it they all stood up and said they wanted to record it standing in a semi-circle. I then adjusted the mic accordingly and had them move a little closer in order that p002 would have an easier time holding the mic. I filmed the four ladies with the camera. During the singing another lady came and semi-participated, but she never really joined the singing completely. One can see her in the film a few times, but mainly her hands. I was reluctant to capture her as well as she was standing behind p002 who was holding the mic 'beam' made out of the middle section of a palm frond. It often enters the picture from above. Unfortunately, the lighting conditions and smoke billowing behind the group made the camcorder (Panasonic HDC-HS60) try refocus several times as well as adjust the lighting. I only found out later, once I noticed this problem with the camcorder, that it is actually possible to switch automatic light adjustment off. | |
