Description: A plant whose roots and leaves are similar to those of ginger. The root is yellow, has a bad smell and cannot be eaten. People plant it in their gardens and use it to frighten away evil spirits, for example when a woman is giving birth to a child or at funerals. The pinecone gin¬ger root is used together with soapnut fruits (hmpɔ́ɔr prì) to make holy water (òm smpɔ́ɔy), used for driving out spirits, for curing diseases and for protection from evil spirits (>krùu báŋ, krùu àt tnɔ́h róoy, krùu pìt ptúu, krùu ptú róoy). Headache (cú kmpóŋ) can be healed by the shaman with a pinecone ginger root charm. The bark is pounded and smeared on wounds (òh) of buffalo and pigs to protect them from flies, and it is also used to dis¬infect the wound when an animal has been castrated (lèc). | ||
