| Description: A 15–20 m tall tree with beautiful flowers and large (10–12 cm), round leaves which are often eaten by in¬sects. It flowers in February or March, and the fruits ripen in April or May. Barking-deer, sambars and squir¬rels eat the flowers and fruits. The bark dries up and peels off each year. The soil around these trees is loose and good for growing any kind of plant, especial¬ly early rice (ŋɔ́ pèe). Sasagrass (pryàak) and Siam weed (mɨ̀aŋ-wáay) will grow around the trees. When people are clearing the fields, they climb up and cut off the small branches but let the trunks remain in the fields, because they make the soil better. Some of these trees have been in the fields for many generations. The wood is fragrant and very beautiful. It is used to make house doors, bowls, spice-mortars (crɔ̀ɔy) and rice-steamers. Rice when cooked in yemani steamers has a very nice smell. When somebody has been hurt by fire, people pound the bark and smear it onto the burn to make it heal more quickly. | ||
