Description: Sesame should be sown at the lower edge of the field, and must be sown before the rice. Otherwise the sesame seeds will grow in the same hole as the rice and the rice plants will die, because the sesame plants are stronger and grow faster. People harvest it after the rice. They cut the plants and make bundles which they hang on tree stumps. Some days later they put the bundles in baskets (ˀyáŋ) and beat (kùh ~) them to get the seeds. Sesame seeds are heated, pounded together with cooked rice and eaten as sweets. The seeds are also used as sea¬soning with different kinds of food. Sesame oil is ob¬tained by heating the seeds in a bamboo tube until the oil comes out. When somebody has a sprained joint, they massage it with sesame oil, and when someone has scabies (ŋà-ŋà), they smear with sesame oil. Black sesa¬me leaves are used for washing people’s hair, and the oil and seeds are used as season¬ing. If there is too much cogon¬grass (srlɨ̀aŋ) in a place, people may sow sesame there. When the sesame grows, the cogongrass dies. | ||
