Description: An 8–12 m tall tree which grows in wet and cool places near streams or along rivers. It is similar to the Artocar¬pus (pntrìik) tree but the leaves are larger. Many roots hang from the trunk, and there are lots of berries on the roots. In Au¬gust and September the berries become red and sweet. Both people and animals, especially rats and squirrels, eat them. The wood is not hard enough for building per¬manent houses, but can be used for tempo¬rary field-houses. Old leaves are rough as sand¬paper, and people use them for polishing water-tubes. The soil around this tree is wet all the time, and a lot of sasagrass (pryàak) grows there. This soil is good for growing rice and people plant chilli, ginger (rwè), chives (slɛ́ɛp) and basil (làk-lɛ̀ɛŋ) around the tree trunk, where it is always wet. | ||
