| Description: A 4–6 m tall tree whose leaves are 15–25 cm wide. The young leaves are red, and later they become light green. The edible fruit is similar to that of the yellow-stem fig (plé lwà). It grows in cool and moist places in valleys and along rivers. In the same area, there is also sasa¬grass (pryàak), and the soil is good for growing rice and vegetables. People often grow chives (slɛ́ɛp) and herbs around this tree, because the soil is always wet from the water which is dripping from the roots. The wood is too soft to be used as building material, but it is used for making fences around the fields. In the hot season, when there are no cultivated vegetables, people go to the val¬leys to collect the young leaves. They are mixed with Erythropalum (krlìiŋ) and acacia (crá) leaves and young banana stems to make a stew or soup, which is very tasty. A soup is made like this: Fill a cooking pot with cold water and heat it. When it boils, cut young leaves, Erythropalum straws and young white banana leaves and put in the pot together with chillies and salt. Boil for 20–30 minutes. | ||
