Description: | Scientific Name: Colocasia esculenta Common Name: taro Arkivcentrum Syd ID: 1997586
Khmu Name: cró òm 'water taro'
Description: A plant which grows by pools, close to or in the water. Its leaves are large and look like cró mòk leaves, but it does not have a big, edible root. When water falls on the leaves, the water looks like silver, and the leaves never become wet. The leaves are poisonous, causing an itch, but in the hot season when there are no cultivated vege¬tables in the fields, people collect the young leaves to make stew (sə́ŋ tàŋ cró): Fill a cooking pot with cold water and heat it. When the water boils, add the taro leaves and boil for 40–60 minutes. Then add roasted buffalo hide sliced into small pieces, Erythropalum (krlìiŋ) straws, a banana flower (yòl), dried chillies, long coriander (hɔ́ɔm pɔ́ɔm páa), tamarind fruits (plé hmpɔ́ɔr) or hog plums (plé kók), crushed rice and salt. When the water has boiled away, add more water and let it boil again. Do this two or three times. After that, the poison has vanished and the stew is ready to eat.
