Title:Interview on beekeeping with Tessema Mikael (part 1.1)
Abstract:In Part 1.1 of the interview with beekeeper trainer Tessema Mikael gives permission that he is recorded and that his recording is archived and disseminated. Having highlighted that honey has many benefits (cultural, religious, medicinal and economic), the interviewee starts with a short overview of the different beekeeping techniques we find in Kambaata today: beekeeping in traditional beehives, made of locally available material (especially bamboo) and requiring only a limited investment, in so-called transitional beehives and in modern beehives (Kenyan Top). According to Tessema Mikael, the modern beehives require a certain degree of specialist knowledge but they potentially provide a greater yield. The honey harvest estimates given are as follows: 1-3 kg from a traditional beehive at one time, 3-5 kg from a transition beehive and 9-15 kg from a modern beehives. Today, the use of traditional beehives is still much more common than the use of modern beehives in Kambaata.
