Title:		Interview on beekeeping with Tessema Mikael (part 1.3)
Abstract:		In Part 1.2 of the interview with beekeeper trainer Tessema Mikael, the interviewee mentions some few advantages of the modern (over the traditional) beehive: The queen excluder (lit. sieve) prevents the queen from passing from the lower to the upper box of the modern beehive. Modern beehives can easily be transported elsewhere when an accident happens and when one wants to save the bees. The entrance for the bees can simply be closed. Encouraged by the interviewer, Tessema Mikael then speaks about the different stages of the bee development and the different bee types in the beehive, i.e. the queen (traditional called "king"), the drones whose function is just to mate with the queen, and the worker bees. The worker bees divide into different groups. There are, for instance, the nurses who clean the beehive. Dirt is taken out, or if too heavy, it is sealed with propolis. There are the guards who control the bees who enter the hive. Bees who come without pollen or water are not let in. Also bees that have been absent for too long are not simply let in. Through a dance they show how far they have traveled. Among the worker bees, there are also dedicated guards for the queen. And there are, finally, the scouting bees, who check out new places to settle if there is a lack of security or food at the current place. Towards the end of this part of the recording, Tessema starts to speak about swarming. If the colony produces a new queen, it is the older queen that leaves the beehive with part of the colony. If there is only one queen and if it leaves, it empties the whole beehive.
