| Description: | Abstract Crippen proposes a dissertation on Tlingit syntax and information structure, exploring how Tlingit permits different phrase orders in a sentence and what those different orders mean. I will show that Tlingit has a single basic subject-object-verb order of phrases and that the other orders are derived from this by dislocation. Dislocation can be to the left periphery or the right periphery of a clause. Left dislocation is associated with the information structural concept of newness, and right dislocation is associated with the concept of givenness. Along the way I will establish a descriptive and theoretical foundation for the analysis of Tlingit syntax, as well as a single coherent summary of verb morphology. My research will be based on both elicitation from native speakers and review of a corpus compiled from previously recorded narratives and oratory. ca.17pp Comments: Donated April 1, 2014.
