Introduction Tongass Tlingit is a dialect of the Tlingit language that is described as having laryngeal vowels rather than tone (Williams, Williams, & Leer 1978).3 It is one of the very few languages that contrast three different glottal states in its vowels, and unlike most others Tongass Tlingit is toneless. Tlingit in general has a basic vowel inventory of /i, e, a, u/ and this combined with Tongass Tlingit�s laryngeal vowel contrasts produces a total inventory of 16 different vowels as shown in table 1.
