Description: | Book: Tanacross Learners' Dictionary with an introduction to Tanacross orthography and grammar. ca.340 pp. Comments: Summary This unusual dictionary is considered to be the first ever compiled of the Tanacross Athabascan language. Its speakers live in Alaska's upper Tanana Valley and number fewer than 50--and it is no longer the daily language of communication spoken in Tanacross households. The dictionary is intended to aid those who want to learn Tanacross with the support of their elders, and to help preserve this distinctive language. It consists of roughly 2,000 English headwords and almost 4,500 Tanacross words and sentence examples. Compiled by Arnold (native speaker and bilingual teacher), Holton (linguistics, U. of Alaska Fairbanks), and Rick Thoman (linguistics student, U. of Alaska Fairbanks). Annotation 2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Citation: Fairbanks: Alaska Native Language Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks, c2009. | |
