Description: | Tlingit Linguistic Expansion in the 19th Century. ABSTRACT: "The geographic expansion of the Tlingit language in the 19th Century, replacing parts of Eyak and some Athabaskan languages, appears to have taken place often without major changes in personnel. Rather, Eyak and Athabaskan communities seem to have undergone a language shift as their political economic relations with Tlingit speakers changed. These historically documented instances of Native American language shift are used to assess the wider applicability of the 'social network and language shift' model, developed by Gumperz and elaborated by Gal to understand linguistic change in 20th-century European peasant communities." Citation: Department of Anthropology, University of California at Berkeley. Presented as part of the XXVIIth Conference on American Indian Languages at the 86th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association. 19 November 1987. Chicago, Illinois | |
