Description: | Ts. paper Themes in Ethnogeographic Research In Alaska. Includes note cards from presentation the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Elvey building, as well as the audio recording of the presentation. (ANLC6329). Presentation Abstract: In the past ten years documentation on the ethnogeography of several of Alaska's Native language areas has become quite detailed. Numerous issues of social and scientific interest can be addressed from ethnogeographic data. The language area as a perceived environment can be characterized by the place name inventory, the system of locative or directional words, and the typology of ecological zones. Important generalizations about aboriginal prehistory and geopolitics can be made from the study of regional place names inventories. Fundamental religious values are demonstrated in the stories and oratory about places. The preservation of Alaska's Native place names is a public policy issue that has received little attention.
