Description: | Ts. Uyakoq (Uyaquq) and the Alaskan Eskimo orthographies. Paper on the invention of writing systems for Native American languages and the subsequent spread of literacy. A Phonemic orthography devised for Inupiaq by Roy Ahmaogak and the first native syllabic orthogaphy for Central Yup'ik invented by a speaker of the Kuskokwim dialect named Uyakoq shortly after 1900. Early forms of this orthography were adopted by Kavaraliaq and Wassilij. A second syllabic orthography was devised by Qiataq after a visit to Uyakoq's village. At least one other Central Yup'ik orthography was used by elderly women in the Kotzebue Sound area. p. 162-174, 5 pp. Citation: In: Language in the USA, Charles A. Ferguson and Shirley Brice Heath eds. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1981. | |
