Description:Ts. Diachronic Typology and the Genealogical Unity of Chukotko-Kamchatkan. Abstract: The status of Chukotko-Kamchatkan as a genealogical family or as the result of convergence is still debated, but this paper argues that the conclusion is inescapable that it does indeed represent a unitary family, albeit one perturbed by substratum and/or mixing effects. The role of areal and in particular diachronic typological factors in this conclusion is discussed within the wider framework of the Uralo-Siberian hypothesis. The main areas of comparison that have proved to be hurdles for the reconstruction of the protolanguage in the past are treated in turn: apparent divergencies in nominal and verbal suffixal inflections in Chukotian and ltelmen ( Kamchadal), in particular the morphological ergativity of the former branch but not the latter; the lack of straightforward distributional correspondences between glottal segments (stops, fricatives, and ejectives) in the two branches; and the widespread lexical borrowing from Chukotian evident in modern ltelmen. ca.21pp Citation: Linguistic Typology.
