In the spring of 1885, Lt. Henry T Allen and his companions, Sgt. Cady Robertson and Pvt. Fred Ficket, were the first Americans to ascend the Copper River and cross the divide to the Tanana River. They were the first non-Natives encountered by many of the Natives in eastern Alaska. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Lt. Allen's 1500- mile journey through Alaska, the village of Mentasta will host a history conference and commemorative ceremony. The conference will feature talks about Allen's journey by some of the foremost tribal historians and storytellers in the Copper River and Tanana River regions, and by several specialists in Alaska history and anthropology. Conference activities will begin on June 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mentasta Community Hall . A picnic, a commemorative ceremony, and outdoor activities will take place June 16 at the site of Batzulnetas village on the upper Copper River.
