Description:Short Alutiiq narrative. In Alutiiq. Roy Nellie, Old Harbor. 15:12 - Topics discussed: - Going by boat and hunting. Trapping foxes and getting were $6 for their skin, 12 cents for weasels. They did not get enough money for their work. Hunting bears and seals and sea lions. Staying in a sod house while hunting. Water would come in the sod house, the roof would leak. - First time the speaker went to school he was maybe 7 or 8. - Remembers walking to Kodiak to get groceries. They would walk in the winter in the snow as well. (around 5:00). - Fishermen would get paid one cent a fish at the cannery. (@5:35) - During fishing season, they would work late in into the night and then wake up at three in the morning to keep working. The fishing season was three or four months long at most. - Using the skin of animals to make leather hinges for the sod houses (@ 7:50), - Remembers eating nothing but fried bread (@8:30) - Used to have grass mattresses and they had nothing but sod houses (@9:30) - Discussing whale hunting (@11:30) in Olga Bay. - Once a month they got their mail, and it came in on a boat (@12:33) kalikyugta = the mailman (@12:55) and after the war the mail started coming by airplane (@13:10) - (@13:50) White people started coming to the village, the people were true before, and then the white people came and they brought illness. - (@14:00) it is different now, and people are starting to go by air, and no longer go by boat. The way he is speaking sounds like Old Harbor. Roy Nelley is not a name known by Elders present, may be Paul Kahutak, but not sure. Most likely not. Still waiting on some information from Florence Pestrikoff and Mary Haakanson to verify if the individual is known or not. Comments: Recorded ANLC 1978. Alternate name SU:7. Side A only.
