Description: | Side A: tape 1: Jeff Leer and Jim Kari interview Bruce Starlight about tones; Proto-Athabaskan; Tsuutina; Navajo; Use the word "Island" as an example. 31:20 Linguistic consultation session involving Bruce Starlight, Gary Donovan, Jeff Leer, and Jim Kari in Fairbanks, AK, in the summer of 1996. From 0m42end, this recording duplicates ANLC0752A (i.e., two separate, partially overlapping recordings of the same session, with this recording starting shortly before ANLC0752A). Focuses on exploring Jeff Leer's hypothesis concerning the emergence of Tsuut'ina mid tone from Proto-Athabaskan unmarked reduced vowels, and Tsuut'ina high tone from PA unmarked full vowels. At 2m15, Jeff notes exceptions to this hypothesis in PA unmarked full vowels in verb stems, which appear with mid tone (rather than high tone) in Tsuut'ina. From 4m309m00, Jeff and Bruce explore Tsuut'ina reflexes of PA unmarked full vowels in open-syllable (CV) noun stems, with Jeff concluding at 9m15 and again at 17m30 that these occur in Tsuut'ina the expected high tone. From 11m30 to 14m15, Jeff and Bruce explore possible contrasts between silo "my brother (woman speaking)" and silo "it is lying there (rope-like or plural objects)". At 19m30, discussion shifts to reflexes of PA unmarked full vowels in open (CV) verb stems, with Jeff noting that Navajo has high tone in these cases (e.g., siló "it is lying there (rope-like or plural objects)") where Tsuut'ina (exceptionally) has mid tone. At 22m30, Jeff concludes that there is a split in the tonal development of PA *CVˑ noun and verb stems. After 23m00, the remainder of the discussion targets other instances of PA *CVˑ verb stems (e.g., "s/he went", "it is cooked"). Side B: Tones continued. Verbs and tones. 31:18 Linguistic consultation session involving Bruce Starlight, Gary Donovan, and Jeff Leer in Fairbanks, AK, in the summer of 1996. Continuation of ANLC0746A. From 0m45end, this recording duplicates ANLC0752B (i.e., two separate, partially overlapping recordings of the same session, with ANLC0752B continuing after this recording ends). Begins with further discussion of emergence of Tsuut'ina mid and high tone from PA *CVˑ syllables (start3m00), noting a split in the tonal development of Tsuut'ina noun and verb stems. Discussion then turns to manner prefixes, exploring "make/do" and "make/do it" (3m3021m15) with ʔá-, xa-, and dà- prefixes. Around 21m15, this leads into discussion of associated verbal enclitics/suffixes -gù, -ìsìi, -ìsà, -ì, -í, -ìdàa, and -dà (21m15end). Comments: Tsuutina formerly known as Sarcee.
