Description:		Alice Gene -Interview on A-5 Old Gakona village. Graves at the old Gakona village. Should be her Mother, Grandpa and two brothers and Aunt. 30 ft off of Gakona river - mother, two brothers, grandpa and aunt. She was small when her mother and brother died. All their homes were washed out by flood in May 1929. Ice jam. Walking around Gakona river finding grave sites. Several were found. Her mother's Dad was buried there too. Charley John buried there. Another big grave yard behind the post office. Her mother's name was Annie Stickwan, Aunt was Mrs. Charley Gray, Grandma is Naan'zigna' Alice thinks it means that 'she move down this way'. Her Indian name is Nii'tiiniilnaa' means rich in potlatch. Story on first homes built. Was copied by a guy who saw a house down south of Chitina. Alice's old house found by the river. Kitchen in the back. 1929 last used. Built by her Father. He made a lot of stuff, drums, snowshoes, everything. Somebody broke in the cache and stole it. her Dad died in 1933 and the year after someone stole that stuff her Dad made. They think that some of the cabins, graves and other sites are covered by silt from the river. Alice was raised there. 50-60 people lived there when she was kid. Found her Dad's cache. Gene Nicholai's cabin was down there too. Ena Nicholai's husband. There was a lot of old timer stuff like bucket made out of copper there, but white people stole it. Harold Richard was a preacher and he cleaned up the site there. He had a museum in Anchorage where some people saw Alice's Dad's stuff he had made. Father was 80-90 years old. Made fish trap in about 3 hours time. Trails went to the village. From here to straight to the old road. Trail goes to the lodge by the sawmill. Trail all over the Copper River. Gakona people used the 13 mile trail for subsistence trail, hunting. Mouth of Sanford River there used to be an old village. Eight mile this side of Paxson there was a village. That is where they speared the caribou and the caribou is still there in the lake. Story about splitting the lake. Dad used to tell Buster all kinds of story. People would visit all up and down the river. used to get on boat by where Buster and Alice lived. Old house going towards the lodge on a trail by the river. Could be Paxson John's or Gene Nicholai's house. They found Paxson John's tent frame. 1930 or 1931 he passed on. And Paxson John's cache. There is another village further down from where they are now. Lots of cranberries around mile 14. More right up by the field near the old village. Back them days everybody share, now days no sharing. Everybody nice to each other not like today where everybody get mad at each other. Lot of walking around on this tape. Both Alice and Buster telling stories and giving information on what they are finding. Big island used to be there and that is where they used to fish. Salt lick used to be by the gravel pit by Tulsona Creek. Moose used to eat there a lot. . Language as given: aht
